Short answer: Online blackjack is a card game where you try to finish closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. You can play a software (RNG) version or a live table with a real dealer. Using basic strategy at a table that pays 3:2, the house edge is roughly 0.5%. In the Netherlands you play at Ksa-licensed sites from age 18, after an identity check.
This guide is written for English speakers living in the Netherlands who want to understand the game before they play it. It covers the rules in two minutes, a compact strategy chart, the table rules that quietly raise the cost of playing, and the practical side of signing up at a Dutch-licensed site when Dutch is not your first language.
How do you play blackjack? A two-minute quick-start
You play against the dealer only. Other players at a live table do not change your long-term odds, whatever folklore says about "bad players at third base". Each round follows the same pattern.
- Place your bet
Pick a stake between the table minimum and maximum. Any optional side bets go on now too. - Receive two cards
You get two face-up cards. The dealer shows one card; the second is face down or dealt later, depending on the variant. - Make your decisions
Hit (take a card), stand (keep your total), double (double the bet, take exactly one card), split (turn a pair into two hands) or, where offered, surrender (give up half your bet). - The dealer plays
The dealer follows fixed rules: draw on 16 or less, stand on 17 or more. Whether the dealer stands or draws on soft 17 depends on the table. - Settlement
Higher total wins and pays 1:1. A tie (a "push") returns your bet. A two-card 21 is a blackjack and pays 3:2 at good tables.
One rule gives the casino its edge: you act first. If you bust, you lose immediately, even if the dealer busts afterwards.
What are the card values in blackjack?
| Cards | Value | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| 2 to 9 | Face value | A 6 counts as 6 |
| 10, jack, queen, king | 10 | 16 of every 52 cards, so a hidden card is often worth 10 |
| Ace | 1 or 11 | Counts as whichever helps the hand |
A hand where an ace counts as 11 is soft: ace + 6 is soft 17, and you cannot bust by taking one more card. Any other hand is hard: 10 + 6 is hard 16, and any card of 6 or more busts it. The soft/hard difference explains why the strategy chart has separate sections.
What is the best online blackjack strategy? A compact chart
Basic strategy is the mathematically best decision for every combination of your hand and the dealer's upcard. "Best" means the smallest expected loss over many hands. It does not make the game profitable; it makes it as cheap as the rules allow.

The chart below is for the most common online setup: 4 to 8 decks, dealer stands on soft 17 (S17), doubling after splitting allowed (DAS). Key: H = hit, S = stand, D = double (hit if not allowed), Ds = double (stand if not allowed), P = split.
Hard totals
| You | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | 10 | A |

Pairs
| You | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | 10 | A |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A+A, 8+8 | P | P | P | P | P | P | P | P | P | P |
| 10+10 | Never split: stand on 20 | |||||||||
| 9+9 | P | P | P | P | P | S | P | P | S | S |
| 7+7 | P | P | P | P | P | P | H | H | H | H |
| 6+6 | P | P | P | P | P | H | H | H | H | H |
| 5+5 | Never split: play as hard 10 | |||||||||
| 4+4 | H | H | H | P | P | H | H | H | H | H |
| 2+2, 3+3 | P | P | P | P | P | P | H | H | H | H |
Two small adjustments: if the dealer hits soft 17 (H17), double 11 against an ace as well. If late surrender is offered, surrender hard 16 against 9, 10 or ace, and hard 15 against a 10.
Tip: Keeping the chart open next to the game is not cheating. At home, at your own pace, there is no reason to guess. Most of the extra cost players pay comes from playing on instinct: standing on 12 against a 2, never splitting 8s, or taking insurance.
How much does each table rule add to the house edge?
At roulette, every bet on a single-zero wheel carries the same edge. Blackjack is different: the printed rules decide how expensive the game is. You find them on the felt ("Blackjack pays 3 to 2", "Dealer must stand on soft 17") or behind the info button in the game.

| Rule | Better for you | Worse for you | Approximate cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blackjack payout | 3:2 | 6:5 | About +1.4 percentage points at 6:5 |
| Dealer on soft 17 | Stands (S17) | Hits (H17) | About +0.2 points for H17 |
| Double after split | Allowed | Not allowed | About +0.15 points if not allowed |
| Surrender | Offered | Not offered | Used correctly, saves under 0.1 point |
| Doubling | Any two cards | Only on 9–11 or 10–11 | About +0.1 to 0.2 points |
Worked example: 3:2 versus 6:5
You bet €10 a hand. At a 3:2 table a blackjack wins €15; at a 6:5 table it wins €12. You get a blackjack roughly once every 21 hands, so over 1,000 hands that is about 48 blackjacks, each paying €3 less: around €144 less in winnings on €10,000 wagered. That is the 1.4-point difference.
Put the rule costs together and the expected loss for €10 a hand over 500 hands (€5,000 wagered) looks like this:
| Table and play | House edge (approx.) | Expected loss on €5,000 |
|---|---|---|
| 3:2, S17, DAS, basic strategy | 0.5% | about €25 |
| 3:2, H17, basic strategy | 0.7% | about €35 |
| 6:5, S17, basic strategy | 1.9% | about €95 |
| Good rules, playing on instinct | often 2% or more | €100 or more |
These are long-run averages. A single session can land far above or below them. The house edge also converts to RTP: a 0.5% edge is a 99.5% return to player, and Dutch-licensed sites must show the theoretical RTP in the game information.
Should you ever take insurance?
When the dealer shows an ace, you are offered insurance: a side bet of up to half your stake that pays 2:1 if the dealer has blackjack. To break even, the hidden card would need to be a 10-value card one time in three (33.3%). In an eight-deck shoe the real chance is about 31%.

The maths over 100 insurance bets of €5: you win €10 about 31 times (€310) and lose €5 about 69 times (€345). Net result: roughly €35 lost, an edge of about 7% on that bet. "Even money", offered when you hold blackjack against an ace, is the same bet in disguise. Basic strategy declines both.
Are blackjack side bets worth it?
Many tables offer optional extras next to your main bet. The common ones are:
- Perfect pairs: pays if your first two cards are a pair, more for a suited pair.
- 21+3: your two cards plus the dealer's upcard form a poker hand such as a flush or three of a kind.
- Bust bet: you bet that the dealer goes over 21, sometimes paying more with more cards drawn.
Side bets have larger possible payouts, but their house edge is almost always much higher than the main game: several percent, sometimes over 10%, depending on the pay table. Check the RTP listed per side bet in the game info, and count any side bet as part of your spending.
RNG or live blackjack: which should you choose?
A blackjack game online comes in two forms. In RNG blackjack, certified random-number software deals the cards and you play alone at your own speed. In live blackjack, a dealer in a studio deals real cards from a shoe, usually eight decks, and you watch on a video stream while software reads the cards for your screen.
| RNG blackjack | Live blackjack | |
|---|---|---|
| Cards | Random number generator | Real cards from a shoe |
| Shuffle | Usually after every hand | Shoe reshuffled part-way through |
| Pace | As fast as you click | Slower: timers and other players |
| Minimum bet | Often low | Often higher |
| Practice mode | Sometimes available | Rarely |
| Language | Interface set by the site | Depends on the table; check before you sit down |
Seats, bet behind and unlimited tables
A classic live table usually has seven seats. If one is free, you take it and play your own hand within a betting timer. If the table is full, many games let you bet behind a seated player: you ride on their hand and their decisions, good or bad, sometimes with the option to follow or decline their doubles and splits.
Some live blackjack games let an unlimited number of players share the same starting cards, each deciding individually. They can include extras such as free doubles, balanced by less favourable rules elsewhere. Read the rules and the RTP before assuming the table plays like classic blackjack.
Is live better than RNG? The house edge depends on the rules, not the format. The slower pace of live play does mean less money wagered per hour at the same stake, so a lower expected loss per hour. Card counting, by contrast, has no practical use online: RNG games reshuffle every hand and live shoes are reshuffled well before the end. If you also play wheel games, our guide to online roulette compares the edges.
Blackjack online, Netherlands rules: how do you sign up as an English speaker?
To play online blackjack for real money in the Netherlands, you sign up at a site licensed by the Kansspelautoriteit (Ksa). The rules are the same for everyone who plays there, whatever your nationality. Many Dutch-licensed sites offer an English version, but terms, emails and verification messages may still appear in Dutch.
- Identity and age check
You cannot play anonymously. Sites verify who you are and that you are 18 or older before you play, often through iDIN (logging in via your Dutch bank) or by uploading an ID document. - Cruks check
Before you play, the site must check the national exclusion register, Cruks. It applies to every player at Dutch-licensed sites, expats included. - Set your limits
You must set limits, such as a deposit limit, a time limit and a maximum balance. Above €700 net deposits a month (aged 24+) or €300 (18–23), the site first has to carry out an affordability check. - Deposit and withdraw
iDEAL is the most widely used deposit method. Withdrawals go by bank transfer to an account in your own name; iDEAL itself cannot pay out. See our guides to the iDEAL casino process and fast payouts.
"Net" deposits means deposits minus withdrawals. Setting a monthly limit above €350 (24+) or €150 (18–23) also triggers a mandatory contact moment with the site. On winnings, you pay no gambling tax yourself at a Ksa-licensed site: the operator pays the 37.8% gambling tax on its gross gaming result. 18+ · Wat kost gokken jou? Stop op tijd.
How we will compare sites, from table rules to payout handling, is explained in our best online casino in the Netherlands guide. Prefer Dutch? Our original blackjack online guide (in Dutch) covers the same game from a different angle.
How far does a blackjack budget go? An example
Say you set aside €100 for an evening and bet €5 a hand at a 3:2, S17 table. Doubling and splitting mean some hands cost €10, €15 or €20, so your real stake averages a little above €5 per hand.
| Format | Hands per hour (rough) | Wagered per hour | Expected loss per hour at 0.5% |
|---|---|---|---|
| Live table | about 50 | about €275 | about €1.40 |
| Fast RNG game | about 200 | about €1,100 | about €5.50 |
The averages look small, but the swings are large: losing €50 or more in an hour is entirely normal, as is being ahead. Treat the €100 as the price of the evening, not as money you expect back, and stop when it is gone rather than topping up.
Staying in control
Blackjack feels like a game of skill because your choices matter. They reduce the casino's edge; they do not remove it. Fast RNG tables and near misses make chasing losses tempting, so decide your budget and session length beforehand and do not raise stakes after a loss.
Every Dutch-licensed site shows the slogan "Wat kost gokken jou? Stop op tijd. 18+", meaning "What does gambling cost you? Stop in time. 18+". If you want a break, you can register yourself in Cruks via DigiD for at least six months. For a confidential conversation, Open over gokken is free, anonymous and available 24/7 on 0800-24 000 22.
Frequently asked questions about online blackjack
Can you win at online blackjack in the long run?
No. Basic strategy makes the house edge small, but it stays in the casino's favour. In the short term you can win or lose; over many hands you lose a small percentage of what you wager on average.
Is online blackjack real money play allowed in the Netherlands?
Yes, at sites licensed by the Kansspelautoriteit, from age 18. You need to verify your identity, the site checks Cruks, and you set mandatory deposit and time limits.
Is live blackjack fairer than RNG blackjack?
Neither is fairer by default. Both must deal random cards; the house edge comes from the table rules. Live blackjack is slower, so you wager less per hour at the same stake.
Why should I avoid 6:5 tables?
A 6:5 payout pays €12 instead of €15 on a €10 blackjack. That adds about 1.4 percentage points to the house edge, roughly quadrupling the cost of the game with basic strategy.
Can I play in English at Dutch-licensed sites?
Some sites offer an English interface, and some live tables may use English; this differs per site, so check what is available. Terms and verification messages may still be in Dutch, so read them carefully or use a translation tool.
Do I pay tax on blackjack winnings in the Netherlands?
Not at a Ksa-licensed site. The operator pays the 37.8% gambling tax on its gross gaming result, so there is nothing for you to declare.
What changed in 2026?
The game itself did not change: blackjack rules and basic strategy are the same as before. The rules around it did. On 1 January 2026 the gambling tax paid by licensed operators rose to 37.8% (from 34.2%). The first licences issued in 2021 expired at the end of September 2026, and the Ksa granted the first eight follow-up licences on 17 September 2026.
On 12 June 2026 the government presented plans for a near-total advertising ban, a ban on bonuses, an overall deposit limit across all sites with an affordability check, and improvements to Cruks. These are proposals, not law yet.
